Argentina – From the Andes to Patagonia

Argentina – From the Andes to Patagonia

10 November to 29 November 2012

If this exciting tour to South America caught your attention when browsing through our 2012 brochure you may be interested to know that the price has now been reduced by £600 per person, with a further £100 reduction on the single room supplement!

A serious derailment on the Viedma – Bariloche line has resulted in this service being suspended and we have therefore amended the tour itinerary to take account of this.

The rail journey from Viedma to Bariloche was due to take place overnight so most of it would have been in the dark and viewing opportunities limited. Instead we will spend a day at the seaside, travelling by train from the huge Plaza Constitution station in Buenos Aires to the resort of Mar del Plata. We will also enjoy a longer, more relaxing stay in Bariloche to explore the area in more depth.

This Connoisseur Tour has many railway highlights including a 'train to the clouds' on the 'Tren a las Nubes' that reaches heights of around 4,200m above sea level and crosses 29 bridges, 21 tunnels, 13 viaducts and boasts spirals and zigzags to earn a reputation as one of the great railways of the world. In contrast the historic metre-gauge 'Tren de las Sierras' displays a wonderful nostalgic charm as it passes through fine mountain scenery. The final railway adventure is a trip on a specially steam hauled charter train on the 'Old Patagonia Express' guided by Jorge Miglioli, an expert on this railway also known as 'La Trochita'. The train travels along the foothills of the Andes and includes a special visit to the locomotive works that houses many of the remains of the locos originally purchased for the line.

Below highlights the changes to the tour:

Days 1 to 12 – As per brochure

Day 13 – Return trip by rail on the newly introduced Talgo train to Mar del Plata on the only 'main line' in Argentina with a reasonable long distance service. Mar del Plata is the country's largest and most sophisticated seaside resort. There is plenty to see and do here including the Museo del Mar, a sea lion colony and the port's fantastic graveyard of wrecked ships, half-sunken and rusting in the sun. Of course you could just have a walk along the 'prom', have a swim, or take lunch in one of a huge choice of restaurants.

Day 14 – Flight from Buenos Aires to Bariloche

Day 15 – Enjoy a full, free day in Bariloche to explore Argentina's Lake District. Why not visit the Civic Centre located in the Main Square, featuring the Patagonia Museum and don't forget to try one of the many shops selling chocolate which Bariloche is famous for!

Days 16 to 20 – As per brochure

Now priced at £5,650 per person sharing a room, with a single room supplement of £855, this rail journey of a lifetime offers real value for money.
