BBC2’s Great Continental Railway Journeys

You’ve seen the Programmes now take the Journeys

As the BBC congratulates itself on yet another successful series of Great Continental Railway Journeys, we in the rail holiday business would also like to offer our thanks to the corporation for once again inspiring viewers to consider train travel as a way to discover Europe.

And we hope to capture some of this surge in rail travel interest by inviting you to follow in Michael Portillo’s exact footsteps and take a replica route shown in one or more of the six episodes from Series 2 of GCRJ or you may even prefer a route from an episode from the previous series.

We have designed a tailor made, unescorted rail break around each of the episodes so if you were inspired by any of them please visit our Great Continental Railway Journeys page on our website to find out what we are offering. These rail breaks are very flexible so if you want to add anything to them our travel consultants can discuss all the options.

In Series 2 of GCRJ we were treated to journeys that visited France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Norway and even Gibraltar. To re-cap Portillo divided his journeys into the following episodes as he used his 1913 Bradshaw railway guide to follow the most popular routes of the Edwardian railway traveller through Europe.

  • Episode 1 – Madrid to Gibraltar
  • Episode 2 – Turin to Venice
  • Episode 3 – Dresden to Kiel
  • Episode 4 – Copenhagen to Oslo
  • Episode 5 – Prague to Munich
  • Episode 6 – Bordeaux to Bilbao

All episodes took in some interesting sights en route and we too can plan your own individual GCRJ by arranging similar and additional sightseeing stops and tourist visits at any of the destinations. So if you do feel inspired by Michael Portillo’s personal journey please consider a replica rail break and contact us direct at info@ffestiniogtravel.co.uk or call 01766 772030.
